Research Capabilities
Integrating Source Disciplines
The Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering is engaged in developing advanced technologies and practices, and in contributing its knowledge and expertise as part of multi-disciplinary approaches to address the regional and national issues faced by government, enterprise and community groups. These developments are based on strong disciplinary capabilities.
Research in the Faculty Information Sciences and Engineering integrates and applies three interrelated discipline areas:
Information Systems
The Information Systems discipline analyses human activity, determines the kinds of data, information and knowledge needed to enable people to act effectively and responsibly, designs technology-based systems to support them and evaluates the impact of those systems. This includes analysis techniques and methodologies, human-computer interaction, data and knowledge representation and design, systems construction and validation, project management, IT governance, and the impacts of systems on people, organisations and society.
Software Engineering
The Discipline area of Software Engineering contributes a wide range of software engineering and computer science methodologies, which are used in the development, integration and maintenance of computer software. This encompasses a variety of programming languages and software development platforms, fundamental as well as advanced algorithms, methods and architectures, and it extends to a diverse spectrum of application areas including such topical examples as computer security, biometric authentication and games programming.
Mathematics and Statistics
The Mathematics and Statistics discipline area provides a strong quantitative basis to research activity undertaken in the Faculty and by other research groups across the university, as well as undertaking basic research in mathematics and statistics. This includes the engagement of mathematics and statistics professions at the national and international level through research, publication, consultation and other scholarly activities.
