All ISE research programs aim to develop research expertise in students and to contribute meaningfully to human knowledge. Students become part of the ISE research community supported by their supervisory panel, supplemented with funding for equipment and research requirements, conference attendance, working space, collaboration with other research students through symposia and seminars, and specialist workshops to meet particular needs (for example, in a specific research software package or research method). ISE Areas of Research: Our research interests span the Information Systems and Technologies spectrum. Current research programs and projects are being conducted in :

The Research Programs: The research programs on offer are With the exception of the PhD, which is usually all thesis work, ISE research programs contain 3 components: 1. Research Training - Two subjects aim to educate students in the nature and process of research: Research Methodology - a coursework subject that reviews the nature of knowledge, the research process and its contributions, the wide variety of research methods used in ISE and the general research issues such as validity, generalisation, fallacies, etc. Research Proposal - a research level subject that aims to formalise the process for the production of the research proposal for each individual student, including the specific literature review, specific research questions, possible methodological issues raised by the research and the form the thesis will take. This unit involves the unit convenor and each supervisor in collaboration. 2. Advanced Coursework - Because ISE is a rapidly changing discipline, it is usually necessary for research students to take coursework subjects to bring their knowledge up to the leading edge in the area of their research. The coursework may be selected from the Postgraduate unit list in consultation with the student's supervisor and course convenor. 3. Thesis - Where the research is conducted. It is a 3-year full time (6-year part time) research program. ISE uses the University-wide doctoral program. Where a student's prior skills in research methods or process seem weak, or where additional subject matter knowledge is indicated, they may be asked to enrol initially in the Masters program. Like the Honours and Masters program, it contains advanced coursework, Research Methodology and Research Proposal units and Thesis. Contact: Associate Professor Craig McDonald The Master of Information Sciences (M Inf Sc) This program replaces the existing two Masters by research offered by ISE. The first year mirrors the Honours program and the second year completes the Masters level thesis. Contact: Associate Professor Huang Xu There are 3 three different awards from the Honours program, one for each of the three undergraduate programs - BIT(Hons), BSE(Hons) and BBI(Hons). This program has a 50% research component complemented by the two research training units above and 3 advanced (PG) coursework subjects Contact: Dr Dat Tran
