Student Participation

How do students arrange their internship?

Students are responsible for finding and arranging their own internship placements in a way that mirrors the real-life search for employment.  To assist this process, students have access to a list of employers who have expressed an interest in supervising and mentoring an intern, although their search does not have to be limited to this source.

Students approach the potential employer as they would if seeking a job by supplying a resume and a letter outlining their reasons for seeking an internship at that establishment.  The employer can then determine the selection procedure, which may include an interview.

A three-way agreement between the student, the employer, and lecturer-in-charge, is then discussed and formalised, outlining the objectives of the internship, the intended tasks, and expectations.  This agreement will be in accordance with the learning outcomes of the Business Informatics Internship Program.

Assessment

Once a Learning Agreement has been agreed between the student and employer, it must be approved by the lecturer-in-charge prior to commencement of the Internship.  The Learning Agreement is not final unless and until it has been signed by the lecturer-in-charge.

Please Note:  an unsigned Learning Agreement may not be acceptable and may result in failure in the unit.

Students are also required to complete:

  • A weekly journal (an entry into this journal is preferred for each day worked, with at least one journal entry for every 15-20 hours worked)
  • A weekly organiser (time-management / diary)
  • Timesheet of attendance at internship (to be completed by the student and signed by your supervisor weekly)
  • Two seminar presentations
  • Final report

The weekly journal will assist with the preparation of both the seminar presentations and the final report, and may provide supporting evidence for any changes made to the Learning Agreement.

Students are expected to present two seminars, as indicated by the Subject Outline and have a one-to-one interview / review session with the lecturer-in-charge over the course of the internship.

Full details of these assessment items can be found on the Business Informatics Internship unit web site.
