ISE takes out three of four top spots in IT comp
The University has continued its success in the Microsoft Imagine Cup taking second, third and fourth place in the national competition in Melbourne last year. In 2006 and again in 2007, the University took the top two spots and went on to represent Australia at the world final.
"We're very proud to have such an impressive track record in this prestigious competition. Congratulations to all the teams, their supervisors and special kudos to our champion Imagine Cup convener, Dat Tran" Dean of Information Sciences and Engineering, Dharmendra Sharma said. "I think it was time to give someone else a turn to take first place" Professor Sharma added.
The theme of this year's Imagine Cup was "Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment". The University's highest placed team's eGreen project was designed to show consumers the full environmental impact of their purchases. The system uses an eGreen rating based on energy, chemicals and emissions involved in the production of the item, for every step in the supply chain and when the item is eventually disposed of.
Consumers can then calculate their individual environmental impact based on their purchasing habits. The third placed, iWater project, allows individuals to monitor their water consumption, and also has a management function to help monitor how water resources are used nationwide. The University's fourth-placed teams idea, GreenRevolution.com, used PDAs and mobile phones to help commuters use public transport, cutting CO2 emissions and reducing traffic congestion.
We are the 2006 and 2007 Microsoft Imagine Cup champions
The University of Canberra has won the top two places in the Microsoft Imagine Cup Innovation Challenge 2007 for the second year running, and the winning team will compete at the international final to be held in Seoul, Korea in August.
The winning team of Philip Haines, Miss Ngoc Thuy Duong Khuu, Thi Vinh and Ping Li, mentored by Dr Dat Tran, developed technology that gives people who are vision impaired better web access and an easy way to program in programming language C#.
The second-placed team included Shafquat Zaman Khan, Jagdish Mehra, and Muhammad Meherban Arif, who developed a system to convert lecture notes into audio files. Students can play the notes back on their MP3 player in a choice of languages with the system, which also incorporates a study scheduler.
The Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering is proud of this great achievement. As a tertiary first, the School incorporated the Imagine Cup competition into its curriculum and the opportunity served as a good challenge for students to showcase their talents.

The Imagine Cup competition is held annually and students of the Faculty of Information Sciences & Engineering are encouraged to participate. For further information, you may contact the Imagine Cup Convener at University of Canberra, Dr Dat Tran.
