Mathematics and Statistics
The Mathematics and Statistics discipline is strongly involved in student support, service teaching, community activity and research.
Student support: The discipline is heavily involved in the operation of the Student Resource Centre, a drop-in centre for aid for students of early-year subjects offered by the School.
Service teaching: About 40% of the discipline's teaching activities are in support of the School's undergraduate courses in computing and engineering. The balance is spread across the University in various forms: the main servicing areas are applied statistics for the School of Business and Government, applied statistics for the Psychology and Nursing courses, mathematics and statistics for the Bachelor of Science course, mathematics for the Secondary Education courses.
Community activity: The discipline manages the University of Canberra Maths Day, an activity for year-12 Schools and Colleges in the Canberra / Southern Highlands region. It contributes to the operations of the Australian Mathematics Competition, which it created. It is involved in the operation of the Canberra Mathematics Enrichment Program, an operation run jointly with the Australian National University and the Australian Mathematics Trust.
