Welcome to Pharmacy program at the University of Canberra. The Program provides:
- postgraduate education for community and hospital pharmacists through it's Master of Pharmacy Coursework, and
- postgraduate training for pharmacists as well as pharmaceutical scientists in industry, government organisations, research institutes and academia through it's Master of Pharmacy Research.
Pharmacy at the University of Canberra is a new education and training initiative in the Australia Capital Territory and the surrounding region responding to the challenge of a changing and demanding health care system, and the lack of trained academics in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
Master of Pharmacy Coursework
The Master of Pharmacy Coursework was established in 2004 and is one of the first graduate-entry pharmacy degrees in Australia. This coursework:
- is open to suitable graduates of human biology or biomedical sciences who have successfully completed subjects of human biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and, anatomy and physiology; and
- is designed for those graduates who are passionate about Pharmacy, and prepare themselves for two-year full-time studies (four semesters, each with 18 weeks) to obtain the Master of Pharmacy (coursework) degree which is equivalent in registration terms, to a 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
Once a pre-registration year is completed within Australia, and local board exams are passed, the students can then practise as Registered Pharmacists in Australia.
This coursework is not a post-graduate course for holders of a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. Pharmacists from overseas are required to pass the APC examination and training process to enable them to become a registered pharmacist in Australia. Assessment of industrial pharmacists not seeking registration is the responsibility of Vocational Educational and Training Assessment Services (VETASSESS).
Master of Pharmacy Research Program
The Master of Pharmacy Research Program was established in 2006 and is the first research-based postgraduate pharmacy study offered in the Canberra and the surrounding region. This Master of Pharmacy Research Program is available:
- to qualified pharmacists and other health professionals in the areas of hospitals, community, industry and government; and
- to graduates with Honours or equivalent in pharmaceutical or biomedical or health sciences, both in Australia and overseas countries.
