The University of Canberra offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in nutrition, and nutrition and dietetics. The undergraduate program, Bachelor of Human Nutrition, covers all the basic sciences required for the study of nutrition, such as physiology and biochemistry. However, it also covers nutritional science, food science, nutrition and disease, nutrition across the lifecycle and nutrition, society and health, all of which gives graduates a broad, contextual understanding of nutrition. Graduates may have a career in government departments or the food industry.

Alternatively, students can continue with their studies in nutrition at the postgraduate level, either in the Master of Nutrition or the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Master of Nutrition prepares students for a variety of health related careers, including government departments, community health, food industry or higher education.  The Master of Nutrition provides students with an advanced program in nutritional science and public health. The range of nutrition and food-related subjects provides for a diversity of graduates from biomedical and nutrition sciences to develop a program of study tailored to their professional development needs. This includes graduate level nutrition subjects, advanced specialist nutrition subjects, including epidemiology, community and public health nutrition, and research. There is also an opportunity for students of Master of Nutrition to undertake a community and public health internship in a workplace setting.

The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is a clinically orientated course, allowing graduates to provide individuals and groups with dietary advice to manage particular diseases or promote health. This course prepares students for work in hospitals, community health centres, government departments and the food industry.

Additional requirements for nutrition and dietetics

All students in the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics course are required to complete 20 weeks of full-time clinical education in clinical settings, community health or food industry and food service. Students must undergo a Police Record Check prior to undertaking clinical experience in community health or hospital settings. All students are also required to present an immunisation history and are strongly advised to have all immunisations complete prior to commencing clinical experience.
Applications for Master of Nutrition and Dietetics require the standard UC application form as well as the supplementary form and two referees.
