Laurie is Associate Professor in Nursing and Post Graduate Course Coordinator for Nursing & Midwifery. She is an experienced academic, with over 80 publications since 1990 in the areas of work integrated learning, cancer nursing and palliative care. She has worked in the health, government, and university sectors. Her doctoral research focused on the production of nursing competence in clinical contexts.
Laurie is recognised as a leader in the area of learning in the workplace. She has been invited to speak to a range of professional groups on contemporary issues in workplace learning, locally, nationally, and internationally. Her leadership in nursing education has been recognised through fellowship of the University’s Learning and Teaching Centre, a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2008), and an Acknowledgement for Educational Excellence from the ACT Council of Nursing and Midwifery (2005). Laurie is an active Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing Australia and has been appointed to national committees in the areas of policy, aged care and nursing education. Laurie’s earlier contributions to cancer nursing, most importantly leading the establishment of the Cancer Nurse’s Society of Australia (CNSA), has been acknowledged through a CNSA Lifetime Member Award (2007).
Laurie's research investigates workplace learning using communities of practice, practice development and distributive leadership frameworks. Laurie is leading the advancement of learning and research in aged care in partnership with Calvary Retirement Community Canberra, Kangara Waters IRT, Morshead Home and Ginninderra Gardens (Anglicare).
As Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Health from 2008-2010, Laurie led the Learning & Teaching agenda through a period of significant growth across the faculty portfolio, including the introduction of the Bachelor of Public Health, the Master of Occupational Therapy, and the Graduate Certificate in Remote Industrial Health. Laurie led the Work Integrated Learning Project, a DEEWR-funded project that delivered a strategic and best practice approach to incorporating work integrated learning across the seven faculties in the University of Canberra in 2010.
