Nursing and Midwifery

Nursing staff

Welcome to the Disciplines of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Canberra.

Our vision

Here at UC we pride ourselves on a strong vision for the future of both nursing and midwifery. We focus on integration with community and industry connections for student learning, as well as working with the nursing community in forms of research and development. Our vision is for our nursing graduates to be critically thinking nurses who challenge the status quo, clearly articulate their concerns, and use evidence to develop effective practice solutions.

In the midwifery curriculum, midwifery is viewed as relational, practical work between childbearing women and midwives which is based on specific knowledge, skills and attitudes. The curriculum, then, is student centred, process oriented and competency based as it is designed to meet the standards of a practice based discipline.

Physical Location

The Disciplines of Nursing and Midwifery are located in Building 10, level B at the University of Canberra campus. New Nursing and Midwifery labs will open at the beginning of 2012.

Number of students and staff

In midwifery we have young women who have just left school, mature-age women as well as everything in between.

Staff

We also do research, individually, collectively and in conjunction with colleagues across the nursing and midwifery communities. We are also engaged in our professions and in community activities, so often we are members of professional boards such as the ACT Nursing and Midwifery Board, or professional organisations such as The Royal College of Nursing Australia, the Australian College of Midwives, Palliative Care Nurses Australia and the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses to name just a few.
