Wiradjuri Preschool and Childcare Centre

(Program Leaders: Careen Leslie; Carmel Richardson; Dr Affrica Taylor; Dr Linda Knight)

Wiradjuri is a Preschool and Child Care Centre located in the Faculty of Education at the University of Canberra. The Centre operates as an integral part of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) program. It is staffed by a Director, a Program administrator and a Preschool teacher all holding a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) degree, and a preschool assistant. Pre-service teachers are drawn from the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) course. Our aims are:

  • To promote a curriculum that is gender inclusive; recognises our society as multicultural; and promotes social justice.
  • To encourage children to:
    • develop their full potential
    • be caring, sharing individuals
    • develop and sustain a spirit of enquiry
    • develop a child's confidence and self-esteem
    • be inventive and cope with change
    • create a love for learning
  • To provide an environment for children to develop socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually and creatively through structured experiences and play.
For many years the children, families and staff of Wiradjuri have been a part of a number of exciting research projects into early learning. This research has produced a range of videos and publications that are now available through the Centre. Current research includes a focus on children and art; and the development of relational pedagogies based on ethnographies of children, place and belonging.
