Professional Experience Units

An integral component of teacher preparation is the series of professional experience units. Periods spent in school settings, together with supporting lecture programs, allows the Preservice Teacher to:

  • Integrate academic preparation and educational studies;
  • Experience sustained immersion in the profession with teacher educators and experienced practitioners working together;
  • Reflect on their experiences; and
  • Give meaning to their developing knowledge and skills.

Specific details for Preservice Teachers, Faculty of Education staff and staff in the field are available via links following each outline.

Teaching Internship (6904)

Final year unit for primary undergraduates and primary graduate entries, early childhood undergraduates and early childhood graduate entries, middle school undergraduates, secondary undergraduates

The Teaching Internship is the culmination of the Professional Experience Program. It is based on an integrated concept of knowledge, skills and attitudes developed by Preservice Teachers over the preceding semesters in curriculum, pedagogy and professional experience.

The Teaching Internship provides Bachelor of Education Preservice Teachers with a forty (40) day placement in a particular primary school or preschool centre with a Mentoring Teacher.

During the extended period the learning environment can be considered in a continuous and intensive manner in order to develop a realistic and comprehensive understanding of the complexity of teaching and its associated activities.

As with earlier professional experience, the internship provides Preservice Teachers with the opportunity to integrate theory with practice.  It allows time to critically reflect on practice and provides opportunities to incorporate insights into, as well as modify, existing theory. The Teaching Internship aims to promote teaching as a professional activity and to assist in the transition from Preservice Teacher to Beginning Teacher.
