Thesis Title: Women and the Performance of Indonesia Public Listed Financial Corporations: A Mixed Method

Abstract

The study has two objectives: first, to examine the effect of the presence of women in the boardroom; second, to explore the perceptions of women in the boardrooms regarding the roles they play in enhancing the company performance. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies are utilized. Surprisingly, the result of the quantitative analysis shows that gender diversity has a significant negative influence in company financial performance. While the research results from the qualitative methodology demonstrate that the women board members believe that they may bring positive affect in the company internal performance.

Potential Implication for Policy Reform or Management Practices:

This study may have implication on the policy level in which Indonesian policy-makers may consider the requirements for companies or even legislative bodies to support the current issue of bureaucratic reform, whether to recruit women or not. 

Short Bio:

Yeney is a lecturer in the Accounting Department, Faculty of Economics, University of Brawijaya (a state-owned university), East Java, Indonesia. She has been lecturing from early 2005 up to now in Financial Accounting, Auditing and Business Communication using both Bahasa Indonesia and English. In late 2008, Indonesian government has sent her to Australia to continue her doctoral degree. Now, she is enrolled as a full-time student in the Professional Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA), Faculty of Business and Government, University of Canberra. She is now focusing on the research project commencing that has been started from the first semester of 2010. For her bachelor and master degrees, she majored in accounting and is further developing her knowledge in this field for her DBA research. Yeney’s research interest is in corporate governance in relation to corporate performance, especially in terms of social and environmental performance.
