Program Delivery
Mainstream Mode (MBA/MIB International & Domestic Students)
The University of Canberra offers its programs during the 2 main semesters (late February to June and midJuly to November) as well as a third Summer School semester. Each main semester is run over a 15 week period comprising 13 teaching weeks and a two-week class free period.
There are two modes of delivery, the mainstream mode and the Saturday workshop delivery mode. All core subjects and a wide selection of elective subjects are offered in both modes. The mainstream mode is primarily for full-time students enrolling in three to four subjects per semester, although part-time students are welcome to utilise this mode of delivery. Subjects in the mainstream mode are scheduled Monday to Friday, generally for three hour blocks starting between 9:00am and 6:30pm with many graduate business subjects commencing at 5:30pm or 6:30pm. The three hour block may be a combination of lectures and tutorials, seminars or computer laboratories. The timetable for the mainstream mode is available at the Universitys website: http://www.canberra.edu.au/timetable/
Saturday Workshop Mode (Domestic Students Only)
Since 2004, a new approach to the flexible delivery mode has been available and is primarily focused on part-time students who need to balance work, family and study commitments. The new approach combines interactive Saturday workshops throughout the semester with learning materials supplied by the Australian National Business School (ANBS). The workshops provide a friendly atmosphere and opportunities to build networks with current and emerging leaders of the Canberra business, professional and public sector community. The Saturday workshop format is designed to help balance career, family, and study and enable practicing managers and other professionals to transfer learning immediately to the workplace.
Subjects scheduled in the flexible delivery mode will require attendance at seven (7) Saturday workshops per semester. Each Saturday workshop will comprise a morning and afternoon session. Students enrolled in this mode, may study up to two subjects per semester one in the morning session and one in the afternoon session. Thus, by attending seven Saturday workshops in any one semester, a student can complete two subjects by enrolling in subjects offered in both the morning and afternoon session of the Saturday program. In this way a student can complete the Graduate Certificate of Business Administration in one year of part-time study, the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration in two years of part-time study and the MBA in three years of part-time study, or less if summer school is undertaken.
Each morning and afternoon session offered in the Saturday workshop mode will provide four (4) hours of face-to-face delivery. In addition, a minimum of eight (8) hours self-study per subject, per week is required. This study will include, readings, exercises, case studies, and WebCT-based activities. Lecturers are available for consultation in person, or by telephone, facsimile and electronic mail. Refreshments, including a light lunch, are provided at the workshops.
The timetable for the Saturday workshop delivery mode is printed in the annual MBA prospectus and is available on the University website. It is also attached to this document. Domestic students may combine subjects offered in the Saturday workshop mode with subjects offered in the mainstream mode.
Winter Term
There is an opportunity to fast track the program by enrolling in the optional Winter Term. The Winter Term provides students with the opportunity to complete one or two extra subjects of study each year in a compacted semester. Winter Term commences 14 June 2011 and finishes 29 July 2011.
