Laura Tolton

Biography

Dr Laura Tolton is an Assistant Professor of Spanish Studies. Her PhD from the University of Queensland combines discourse analysis, Spanish, studies of violence against women, and Colombian culture. She received her Masters in Spanish Linguistics from Instituto Caro y Cuervo in Colombia, with a thesis in psycholinguistics exploring the faculties of language and culture in the mind. Her undergraduate degree was in Spanish, Hispanic studies and women’s studies from St Olaf College in the United States. Laura’s research interests include discourse analysis, Colombia, violence against women, birth, discrimination, intercultural communication, and teaching culture in the language classroom.

Laura enjoys teaching highly participative classes in a variety of areas. She has taught in Spanish and English, including conversation, reading, writing, grammar, phonetics and culture, as well as in the areas of intercultural communication and translation.
