Julie Posetti

Biography

"I am an award winning journalism academic and broadcaster. I was the recipient of the University of Canberra 2005 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and I received a national Carrick Award for Outstanding Contribution to Learning and Teaching in 2007.

I’m currently writing a PhD dissertation on The Twitterisation of Journalism, examining social media’s transformation of professional journalism. My other research interests include: the reporting of race and culture – especially media coverage of Muslims and Islam post-September 11th; public broadcasting; political journalism; talkback radio.

I was UC’s Chief Investigator on the national, federally-funded, Reporting Diversity project from 2005-2009 which focused on coverage of Multiculturalism. In this capacity, I oversaw the development of an online bibliographical database of research on journalism and diversity and I produced a case study on ABC radio coverage of Muslim women and veiling.

I have published academically in Australia and internationally on the themes of journalism and social media, journalism/broadcasting and Multiculturalism/Islam and political interference at the ABC in the Howard Era. I have also delivered conference papers on these themes internationally.

At the University of Canberra, I teach radio and television journalism at the 2nd and 3rd year levels, with an emphasis on broadcast productions which showcase student reporting. I also initiated a successful internship partnership with the ABC in Canberra for UC broadcast students. I have twice been invited to South Africa’s prestigious School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University as a visiting lecturer, working with students from diverse backgrounds on a convergent journalism project. I will return in that capacity in 2011, to lecture on social media.

As a radio and television journalist with the ABC, I reported politics and social affairs at the national level. In recognition of a series of reports on racism and Hansonism for ABC Radio Current Affairs (AM and PM) I was awarded the 1996 Human Rights Award for Radio by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission. The same year I was a finalist in the prestigious Walkley Awards for Best Investigative Story for an AM series on the abuse of children in state care. During my 13 year ABC career I was a political correspondent based in the Canberra Press Gallery for AM, PM and The World Today, a Regional News Editor (Wollongong) and a reporter for ABC TV Documentaries. I also regularly presented news and current affairs programs in Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra.

I am now the Australian correspondent with the respected PBS Website Mediashift and I continue to freelance as a reporter and commentator for the ABC and publications like Crikey. I also blog at J-Scribe (http://www.j-scribe.com) and I curate a lively and well-followed Twitter account @julieposetti (http://www.twitter.com/julieposetti)"
