Sally Burford

Biography

Sally Burford is a Senior Lecturer in Internet Communication in the Faculty of Communication and International Studies at the University of Canberra. She is currently the Course Convenor for the Master of Internet Communication and the Master of Knowledge Management. She has been the course proponent for the new Master of Information Studies which will incorporate the previously mentioned courses and re-introduce Librarianship at UC. Sally will convene the new course when it commences in 2009.

Sally’s doctoral research is in the area of web information architecture and her early findings were published in  a paper titled: Understanding how Organisations achieve Effective Web Information Architecture – using a Grounded Theory Approach. This paper was awarded the Paul Thistlewaite prize for Best Conference Paper at AusWeb 2008.

Sally is a foundation member of a collaborative research group based at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga – Collaboration in Information Organisation (CIO) which aims to produce research that will improve information organisation practices. This group has internal CSU funding and members in Wagga, Canberra, Singapore and Melbourne.   Sally and colleagues within this group have recently completed research projects which have resulted in the following publications:

Sally is a member of the Web Industry Professionals Association and was a member of the Program/Organising Committee for Educause 2003 and the Program committee for AUIC 2008 (Australian User Interface Conference).

Sally has considerable industry experience in managing online environments. She was responsible for the implementation of a single corporate visual design of the and a successful content management system implementation during her management of the University of Canberra’s web site. She managed an online education unit at Flinders University. Her career incorporates 10 years of academic life in the School of Information Studies at Charles Sturt University and a year teaching in Malaysia.
