Tracy Ireland
Biography
Tracy Ireland joined the University of Canberra in 2009 She has previously practiced as an archaeologist and heritage professional with over twenty years experience covering a broad range of heritage research and conservation management planning. Tracy’s PhD from the University of Sydney, entitled An Artefact of Nation: Historical Archaeology, Heritage and Nationalism in Australia, won the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Heritage Prize in 2002. an Historical Archaeology (http://www.asha.org.au/journal/), the major journal for historical archaeological research in the Australia-Pacific region.
Tracy’s most recent book, co-edited with Jane Lydon, Object Lessons: Archaeology and Heritage in Australia, was published in 2005. A feature of Tracy’s professional practice has been her work on social heritage values, Indigenous historic sites and the development of GIS methodologies for heritage research and management planning. She has prepared Conservation Management Plans for many state and nationally significant places, such as the Australian War Memorial, Lake Burley Griffin, the Old Great North Road and the Defence lands of Jervis Bay.
Tracy’s research interests include all aspects of historical archaeology and heritage management, the cultural politics of the past, contact sites, heritage interpretation and landscape archaeology. She is currently working on an edited collection on heritage and ethics to be published by Springer, a project report on the historical archaeology of a region of the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus (http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/archaeology/research/projects/taesp/) and is developing a new project on the conservation of in situ historical archaeological remains.
