Eugenie Keefer Bell
Biography
Dr Eugenie Keefer Bell is Associate Professor of Architecture in the Faculty of Arts and Design. She studied in the USA and Australia, and holds a PhD in Architecture and Fine Arts (University of Western Australia). Her research interests includes architecture and design history/theory, with a focus in the post-1850 architecture, design, and applied arts of Japan, Australia, Europe and the United States, including the reciprocal influences between Japan and Western countries. She maintains a creative studio practice as an artist/designer and has exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions in Australia, Japan and the USA.
Recent papers include: Regionalism, Place and the Role of Japan in Post-WWII Australian Domestic Architecture, Messengers of Modernism: Japan and Scandinavia in post-WWII Australia, Sustaining Culture in Japanese Architecture: preservation, relocation and adaptive reuse, and Transforming Metal into Skin.
As an artist/designer, she has been awarded several Australia Councils grants and fellowships. Her creative work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the National Gallery of Australia, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. She is currently Deputy Chair of the National Education Committee of the Australian Institute of Architects, and in 2006 was awarded the Australian Council of University Art and Design Schools (ACUADS) Distinguished Teaching Award.
