To succeed in the film, television and digital media industries students need creative flair and the solid base of hands-on experience combined with advanced theoretical knowledge. Media Arts and Production focuses on the latest production techniques and industry contexts, and encourages students to develop their skills through practical creative work.
Overview
We offer a unique combination of core skills across image, sound, video, and networked media, along with the choice to combine specialist units in drama, documentary, 3D animation and interactive media - crucial preparation for the rapidly changing field of contemporary media production.
There are a number of exciting career pathways that include possibilities in industry and academia. Units focus on real-world production and collaboration, and the emerging area of cross-platform production, where film, documentary, broadcast, networked, social and mobile media are combined in creative products.
Exchange Opportunities
The University of Canberra Student Exchange Program allows students to study overseas for a semester and receive full credit towards their degree. We also welcome international students to Canberra on exchange.

For UC students in other degrees, the Media Arts Major and Minor offer practical, creative elective options.
The Bachelor of Media Arts and Production degree can be combined to form four-year Double Degrees with Arts, International Studies and Information Technology; these degrees offer excellent value and broaden study options even further.
Bachelor of Media Arts and Production (985AA)
The degree in Media Arts and Production is a balanced program of advanced practical production work and integrated analytical study. It provides students with sophisticated knowledge, skills and abilities to produce advanced creative works, and equips them to find work in the constantly changing media industries. The course takes an integrated approach to production, covering television and video production, sound, networked and interactive media, motion graphics and 2D and 3D animation. The course emphasizes creative production in a dynamic cultural and industrial context.

Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Creative Communication (891AA)
The Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Creative Communication is designed to equip students with a critical understanding of creative practice, a sound knowledge of their chosen field, and the ability to complete a substantial creative project. They produce a creative thesis and short exegetical essay as their research product.
Bachelor of Media Arts and Production / Bachelor of Arts (988AA)
The Bachelor of Arts degree provides a flexible preparation for many areas of vocational and professional employment, as well as the broad perspective required for informed citizenship.
A four-unit Liberal Arts Foundation sequence, with choices at individual unit level, combines with a choice of Arts majors to complete the requirements of an Arts degree.
The remaining units mark the character of the degree as either arts-oriented or professional, and include an open choice of one full major.
The degree in Media/Multimedia Production is a balanced program of advanced practical production work and integrated analytical study. It provides students with sophisticated knowledge, skills and abilities to produce advanced creative works, which will equip them to find work in the constantly changing creative film, television and multimedia industries.
The program focuses on the latest techniques and theoretical knowledge in television, video and multimedia production, spanning drama, documentary, commercials and music videos, as well as interactive media forms such as web, CD-ROM and DVD.
Bachelor of Media Arts and Production / Bachelor of Information Technology (998AA)
This double degree program is designed to provide students with the conceptual and analytical skills required for a professional career in the design and production of interactive and computer-based media. The breadth offered by the double degree gives graduates a broader perspective across both multimedia production and computing, provides greater vocational flexibility and increases the range of employment opportunities in both the private and public sectors.
Bachelor of Media Arts and Production / Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (992AA)
This combined degree offers students an opportunity to undertake a professional qualification in Media Arts and Production as well as to gain intercultural skills and knowledge which will enable them to work in international contexts.
The Bachelor of Arts in International Studies degree investigates the interplay of cultural, political and economic forces in regional and global arenas and gives students the opportunity to attain intercultural understandings. This is enhanced by foreign language study and a highly recommended international exchange semester.

Higher degree research
Successful graduates from the Media degree may continue to the Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Creative Communication, a one-year Honours program in which students develop advanced, practice-based research projects, working individually with Faculty staff.
Whether continuing into industry, or further postgradute study, the Honours year is an opportunity for students to develop independent, innovative, intellectually rigorous creative practice.
Successful Honours students can go directly into the 2nd year of Master of Arts in Communication (Research and production based).
Master of Arts in Communication (Research) (230AA)
The Master of Arts in Communication by research allows candidates to acquire a critical understanding of advanced media production research, and a sound knowledge of their chosen field, whilst undertaking a substantial research production project. Candidates may undertake investigation and creative work in all areas of media arts and production. They work on a practice-based research product and a short thesis.
