Master of International Development (193JA)

The Master of International Development is an interdisciplinary course that examines the theory and practice of development in a global context. The program focuses on three linked themes relevant at both the local and global levels: professional practice, sustainable development, and development management. The aim of the course is to produce graduates who combine a critical understanding of relevant development theories with the practical skills required to plan, implement, and monitor development projects successfully. The course is designed and taught by academics who have extensive experience as development practitioners, and who are able to share the knowledge gained from the field in the class room, and make links between the theory and practice of development.

Units offered in the course are structured around development practice and cross-cultural practices in dealing with issues of poverty, empowerment, agency, as well as socio-economic and political development not merely in the context of developing countries but in relevant contexts in South as well as North. The concept of Gender mainstreaming has been taken aboard holistically and each unit has incorporated the need for including gender as a core concept to be practiced across the course.

The Master of International Development will provide an understanding of the principal ways in which theories of development critically engage with development politics and practices leading to sustainable development. It provides a solid foundation of the skills needed to plan, design, manage, monitor and evaluate development activities in a global context. Core elements of the course “Development Research” and Development Research Project” are the highlights and effectively address UC policy on enhanced research capabilities and professional practice.

Upon completion of this degree students will have the analytical skills required to work in the Development sector. The course aims to prepare graduates who will be the new generation of practitioners and scholars with the ability to engage with the theories as well as practice with a strong commitment to sustainable development in local as well as global contexts.

The Master of International Development is suitable for those who have an undergraduate qualification in a relevant discipline or have gained professional experience by working with public or private - sector development agencies.
