Interior Architecture/Design
Interior designers design the inside of buildings and residences, usually in consultation with architects and building services engineers. They design interiors with due regard to variables such as safety, ergonomics, proportion, space, colour, texture, light and sound. Interior designers may also be involved in exhibition design, set design for theatre, film and television, and the restoration of heritage interiors.
The Bachelor of Interior Design is an articulated program of study offered jointly by the School of Applied Art and Design, Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and the School of Design, University of Canberra. The third year is two semesters of full-time study in the School of Design at UC.
In the University third year students have a two-semester enrolment in the core subject Interior Design where they under take actual interior design projects in a studio environment. In addition they study Practice Management, Design History, Furniture Design and Exhibition Design.
The Interior Design course has a focus on the development of strong design and presentation skills with an emphasis on conceptual clarity, logical development of concepts and refinement of design ideas, all within a context which includes theoretical, historical and craft issues.
Careers
Graduates are employed as interior designers or contract designers with architectural and interior design practices, building developers, retail planners, contract furniture designers, facilities managers, and specialised architectural products designers and manufacturers.
