Foundation Units

The Faculty of Arts and Design foundation units are designed to assist students by providing essential concepts and/or skills for university level study.

Foundation units:

  • have content and learning outcomes of relevance to the majority of disciplines within the Faculty (FAD);
  • can be integrated into elective Minors or Majors in undergraduate courses; and,
  • are generally taught by a mix of academic staff from within FAD.

Most undergraduate degrees in the Faculty of Arts and Design currently include two foundation units in the first year. By 2013, these units will be a requirement of all degrees in this Faculty.

The two foundation units are:

Influence, Belief and Argument 8132
Creativity and Critique 8172

Each foundation unit is on offer at least twice a year to cater to student demand. Course outlines will recommend Faculty of Arts and Design students, which unit they should complete in which semester. You might, for example, be asked to take Influence, Belief and Argument (8132) in Semester 1 and Creativity and Critique (8172) in Semester 2, or vice versa.

The first year of a typical degree within the Faculty of Arts and Design looks something like this:
