FIRST is an annual publication of creative writing by students at the University of Canberra, and has been a part of the university's life since 1993. Initially published as Analecta in 1993 and 1994, it became FIRST in 1995. Since 2005, the involvement of graphic design students in its design and layout has ensured that the publication's appearance reflects the high calibre of work contained within its pages. 

Each year FIRST is produced by a team of writing and editing students who get to experience the process of putting a publication together. FIRST also offers the first point of publication for many of the university's talented creative writers. As author Garth Nix says in the Foreword to Tattoo: FIRST 2008: 'It is likely there will be writers in Tattoo whose names will one day adorn the front of books, stand out in the credits of films, or become frequent bylines in print or online publications.'
