The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture course offers a liberal arts and technical program for those with a special interest in architectural studies and provides the basis for a further postgraduate professional degree.

Students have the advantage of learning from and contributing to Australia’s National Capital Canberra, an internationally recognised model design city.  The architecture program reflects the design ethos of the capital in its education profile with opportunities for study that complement Canberra as a laboratory for design invention. Students also use community and government projects as study vehicles, engage with public policy in environment and design and have access to international design connections and alliances.

The course is characterised by project based design studio learning integrated with technical studies and research led teaching. History and theory themes related to landscape urbanism, cultural meaning in architecture and place making, modernism and urban policy and form underpin the course. Students engage in interdisciplinary and architecture specific studies and activities and are encouraged to participate in design discourse.

For students wishing to proceed towards a career in the architecture profession the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture can be used as a basis for admission to the two year Master of Architecture degree.  Both of these degrees are professionally accredited courses and together provide the education pathway towards registration as an Architect in Australia.

The Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree also offers a pathway for postgraduate studies in a range of other design disciplines taught at the University including interior architecture and digital design.

Master of Architecture

The Master of Architecture degree provides a professionally accredited, postgraduate level qualification for candidates whose first degree is the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Canberra or equivalent.

The Master of Architecture has unique status as the only postgraduate architecture program in Australia’s National Capital Canberra, an internationally recognised model design city. The course has a strong design studio ethos complemented by and integrated with studies in technology, history and theory. Students engage in a range of discrete design electives that provide special opportunity for self-determined development including collaborative interdisciplinary studios, professional placements associated with design or research projects, overseas study programs, history, theory and curatorial studies and architecture master classes. Students are encouraged to take advantage of research opportunities including those that might align with the Canberra story.

There is significant professional and community engagement in the form of sponsored projects and opportunity to engage in study with other design postgraduate students in interior architecture, landscape architecture and industrial design. Master of Architecture students can also complete a Master of Digital Design at the University of Canberra, with only one additional semester, by integrating their elective program.

On completion of the Master of Architecture award a student will have enhanced and developed their architectural skills and expertise to a professionally accredited standard, as determined by the Board of Architects of the ACT and the Australian Institute of Architects, who accredit and recognise the degree.

The Master of Architecture is a stand-alone course. Students with degrees other than Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Canberra or equivalent may apply, but may be subject to a bridging program and/or the submission of a portfolio of work before admission to the Master of Architecture program.

Full-time domestic students in this course may be eligible for student income support in the form of Youth Allowance or Austudy.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applies to this course.
