Staff, Students, Alumni & Friends of the University of Canberra are invited to attend a special exhibition of the Lu Rees Archives with guest speaker Emily Rodda.
Valued at more than a milion dollars, the Lu Rees Archives is one of the world's most comprehensive collections of books and other resources about Australian Children’s Literature.
Recently the Lu Rees Archives were successful in gaining funding for cataloguing the overseas editions of Australian authors and illustrators. To celebrate, the University of Canberra will host a special exhibition of the collection.
The exhibition will feature works from the collection with a focus on the translation of Australian children’s literature. Guest speaker Emily Rodda, one of Australia’s most popular and highly regarded children’s authors will speak about children’s books in many languages.
Guest Speaker Emily Rodda
Emily Rodda is one of Australia’s most versatile, highly regarded, and hugely popular writers for children.
Her first published book, Something Special (1984) won The Children’s Book Council of Australia Junior Book of the Year Award in 1985, and Emily’s books have since received this accolade an unprecedented four additional times.
Emily’s catalogue of over 50 works have won many children’s choice awards such as the YABBA, KOALA, CROC, COOL, CYBER, West Australian Young Readers’ Awards and Dymock’s Children’s Choice Award.
In 1995 Emily received the prestigious Dromkeen Medal for her overall contribution to Australian children’s literature. However Emily’s writing is not only popular in Australia, her books have been translated into more than 25 different languages and are read around the world.
Emily was born in Sydney in 1948 and grew up in Sydney’s North Shore. In 1973 she graduated from the University of Sydney with a MA (Hons) in English Literature. After graduation, she worked as an assistant editor at Paul Hamlyn publisher, then joined Angus & Robertson publishers where she worked in various roles for 20 years, becoming head of publishing and in charge of the children’s list. Between 1988-1992, she was Editor of the Australian Women’s Weekly and there began her writer’s notebooks recording ideas for future stories, many of these for young people.
Emily is a valued supporter of the Lu Rees Archives and we are very privileged to have her speak at this event.
