Medals, Prizes and Awards

Tom Calma Medal

This medal is awarded in honour of the University of Canberra's first Indigenous Chancellor, Dr Tom Calma AO. The Tom Calma Medal is presented annually to a graduating Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student considered to have achieved outstanding academic results and to have made a valuable contribution to the University or wider community.  Nominations can be made by any member of staff or the University community.

Herbert Burton Medal

First awarded in 1984, the medal is named in honour of the late Emeritus Professor Herbert (Joe) Burton who chaired the committee that recommended the establishment of the University's precursor institution, the Canberra College of Advanced Education.

The Herbert Burton Medal is presented annually to a graduating student considered to have achieved outstanding academic results and to have made a valuable contribution to the University or wider community.

Nominations can be made by any member of staff or the University community.

University Medal

The University Medal will be awarded to a graduating student on the basis of the highest academic achievement from an eligible undergraduate honours degree course with First Class Honours, or an undergraduate degree course awarded with honours with First Class Honours.

The University Medal would normally be awarded to a graduating student with First Class Honours who:

  • Has achieved a GPA of 6.5 or above;
  • Has completed no less than two thirds of the degree that they are graduating from at the University of Canberra;
  • Has not failed a unit throughout their course of studies

Chancellor's Commendation

The Chancellor's Commendation will be awarded to the student who achieves the highest grade point average for their entire undergraduate program in each Faculty and is not eligible for the Herbert Burton Medal or a University Medal.

A Chancellor's Commendation would normally be awarded to a graduating student who:

  • Has achieved a GPA of 6 or above;
  • Has completed no less than two thirds of the degree that they are graduating from at the University of Canberra;
  • Has not failed a unit throughout their course of studies

Dean's Excellence Award

Dean's Excellence Awards are awarded each semester to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students who achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.5 or higher and on an annual basis to part-time undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students who achieve a GPA of 6.5 or above over the year

Full-time study is based on a minimum of 9 credit points per teaching period. For the purpose of this award, part-time study is based on a minimum of 9 credit points completed across at least two teaching periods in the academic year with no more than 6 credit points in any teaching period.

Canberra Award

The Canberra Award is a certificate of the University of Canberra that will enhance your career prospects. It is awarded at graduation and acknowledges that you have successfully undertaken an active program of personal development over the course of your University career

Prizes

The University of Canberra has in excess of 200 Prizes, medals and awards which are awarded annually to students for meritorious academic achievement.

Prizes can take the form of medals, books, cash amounts and industry memberships. The Prize will be listed on your Academic Transcript.

Please note that you do not apply for University of Canberra Prizes. Students are nominated by each Faculty and recipients will be notified in writing.
