    Syllabus

This unit investigates the practice of electronic music from its little known beginnings in the late 19th century through to its appropriation by the post-World War 2 avant-garde, leading to its inevitable incursion and eventual takeover of popular music. Examples of electronic music in film, TV, advertising and digital media will be studied alongside experimental works from Berio to the Beatles, Cage to Kraftwerk up to today's practitioners in the new genres of electronic music. Students will be provided with a weekly reading and listening/viewing list and will complete an online project on a particular aspect of electronic music of interest to them.
