Syllabus

This unit will teach students how workers and firms make decisions in the labour market. The unit will also teach students how the government can alter the economic opportunities available to both workers and firms by changing the "rules of the game" through social policies, thus influencing the decisions of these two players. At the end of the unit, students should be able to use the tools learned in the unit to understand, analyse, and predict some of the labour market outcomes and examine the different ways social policy can affect the interaction between workers and firms.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of basic labour economics theory, including labour market structures and wage determination;

2. Apply their understanding of theoretical models to analyse trends in data pertaining to topics in labour economics;

3. Apply their understanding of theoretical models to case studies presenting in the unit;

4. Construct, defend, and analyse important labour policy issues; and

5. Comprehend, assess, and criticize existing empirical work in labour economics.
