    Syllabus

    This unit introduces the spatial concepts and core skills that are essential to design and creative thinking.

    The focus of this studio is on developing an understanding of design language and elements and extending skills in lateral thinking, visual literacy and creative problem solving.

    Students study design elements and simple spaces and places exploring concepts such as enclosure, human habitation, scale, form, light, material expression and composition. It also explores the analysis and manipulation of two- and three-dimensional forms as primary communication tools and as vehicles for problem solving.

    Students will experiment with graphic and other communication methods to represent their design thinking.

    Project based learning is undertaken in a studio environment.

    Learning Outcomes

    On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

    1. Understand design elements and language as applied to simple spaces, objects and places;

    2. Read design drawings and communicate concept design proposals using hand drawn and other graphic techniques and elementary models;

    3. Make articulate verbal presentations about their work in public forums; and

    4. Source and interpret reference material and integrate this into their design.
