Syllabus

English 2 is the second in the sequence of English Language units in the University of Canberra College Diplomas. Having completed the English units, students will be able to participate much more confidently in academic and social life on campus and in the broader Canberra community.

English 2 is a unit that will assist students to develop fluency in English; to consolidate their knowledge of some more complex structures of English; to extend their vocabulary, particularly in those areas that allow them to communicate comfortably with their peers about contemporary issues; and to further develop the important study skills which will take on increasing importance for them in the latter stages of their College Diploma.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Convey meaning in general conversations, make a significant contribution in tutorial and class settings in English in the university setting;

2. Understand conversations and media broadcasts presented by educated speakers (and others whose accents are familiar);

3. Write a well-constructed paragraph and academic essay that builds on prior knowledge of English grammar and sentence construction and you will be able to demonstrate awareness of the conventions of academic writing, appropriate referencing and citations; and

4. Read general and academic texts, and access reading strategies needed for tertiary study, and you can independently research and access information electronically through data bases.

Contact Hours

There are six hours of tutorials per week in the eleven teaching weeks of the semester. Outside those hours, students may also make appointments with academic staff to discuss progress and to seek guidance on questions that are of concern.
