Syllabus

This is an introductory unit in statistics designed for students in accounting, commerce and related disciplines. Emphasis is placed on the application of statistical techniques to those disciplines. Topics may include populations and samples; the presentation and interpretation of data; measures of central tendency and variability; probability and probability distributions; estimation of population parameters; hypothesis testing on population parameters; tests of association; correlation and simple linear regression; time series analysis; and index numbers. Analyses will be carried out using Microsoft Excel.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Express real life problems in statistical terms;

2. Summarise data graphically and statistically via a computer package;

3. Assess risks in business situations;

4. Estimate and test population parameters in business situations; and

5. Calculate and interpret the components of a time series and economic index numbers.

Basic mathematics and approx to Year-10 High School standard.
