This unit introduces the computer applications in medical radiation science of digital image changes, digital image quality improvement and image data information, handling and storage. It covers the human observer in the chain of diagnostic imaging, image quality assessment, digital imaging processing and analysis, image reconstruction and visualisation, image data storage and communication and imaging informatics.
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Critically reflect physiological characteristics of the human observer and of human perception and the relationship of these in image observation and determination of image quality;
2. Identify principles underpinning the various forms of digital image processing techniques available in diagnostic imaging and demonstrate technical skills to manipulate images to improve image quality;
3. Apply a range of established practical skills in image processing techniques found in diagnostic imaging systems;
4. Compare and contrast image processing methods used in medical imaging to those used on other digital image processing areas;
5. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of digital images and the processes of image enhancement, display, storage, transmission, and retrieval systems; and
6. Critically analyse concepts of imaging informatics including computer assisted diagnosis.
2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of practical per week.
