This unit examines the role of lawyers in the legal system and their broader social obligations. Attention will be given to the history, organisation and functioning of the profession as well as to the place of ethical rules and professional discipline. The unit will also examine the types of legal work and work structures within the profession, the cost of legal services and problems of gaining access to legal services in Australia. It will also consider the role of non-lawyers in the legal system.Class Contact

On completion of the course of study in this unit students will be able to understand the role and functions of the legal profession; the law applying to professional and judicial regulation of barristers and solicitors; lawyers' duties to their clients; other legal duties affecting lawyers.
