    Learning Outcomes

    Upon satisfactory completion of this unit students will understand and be able to apply the principles of the criminal law as practised in the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. Students will develop further the skills of legal reasoning and analysis, advocacy, legal research and writing, and problem solving.


    This unit will provide students with an understanding of the principles of the criminal law of the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales. It examines the mental and physical elements of offences with particular reference to homicide, non-fatal offences against the person, sexual offences, drug offences, theft and larceny, inchoate offences, defences and complicity. The unit will also introduce students to criminal practice including the standard of proof, the formation and role of the jury and the trial process.

    Entry to the LLB program or Social Science in Justice Studies program.
