Introduction

This course is designed for students interested in working as a teacher in primary school settings. It provides students with a sound theoretical base for teaching along with opportunities to develop a repertoire of practical skills.

The course is carefully structured with a balance between theory and practice in teaching. Students engage in a series of education and curriculum study units which are clustered with appropriate professional experiences. This practical experience spans different levels and organisational modes of the primary education setting.

Students completing this course of study will be qualified to teach children 5-12 years of age.

Course Requirements

At least 48 credit points comprising:
(a) Required (48 credit points)

Major in Key Learning Areas (EC/P GE) (Restricted) 24 credit points
Minor in Teacher Education (P GE) (Restricted) 12 credit points
Minor in Professional Experience (EC/P GE) (Restricted) 12 credit points

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree or hold qualifications deemed equivalent by the University's Admissions Committee.

Additional requirements:
All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary, Graduate Entry) degree are required to complete appropriate police checks or sign employment declaration forms prior to the commencement of their Professional Experience placement.

Additional admission requirement:
An overall Academic IELTS band score of 7.5.

Professional Recognition

The degree has been accredited with the ACT Department of Education. Different States have different requirements for teaching registration.

NB: Students are advised that it is their responsibility to check with the relevant Departments of Education that the combination of their first degree and the Bachelor of Education Primary (Graduate Entry) course from the University of Canberra will enable them to be employed in the state or territory in which they wish to teach.
