Introduction

The course will provide graduates who either are at present, or who seek to become, professionals in the tourism industry with the skills needed for the sustainable management of tourism products, resources, and infrastructure. A core of skills in sustainable tourism is combined with elective skills in specialised areas that are a feature of modern tourism management. Graduates of this course will be equipped to manage organisations and assets in tourism in either the private sector or the public sector. Emphasis is on the acquisition of skills needed to manage resources in a systems approach such as to ensure the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the tourism industry.

Graduates will be equipped to manage tourism attractions, cultural and natural resources, tourist information offices, tourism strategic development plans, and tourism businesses.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applies to this course.

Academic requirements: 24 credit points at PG level:

* Students may elect to undertake a 6 credit point Independent Study PG unit proposed by the School of Languages, International Studies and Tourism instead of two elective 3 credit point PG units. This may have to be taken in semester two for full time students.

Admission Requirements

Admission is normally on the basis of the completion of one of the following:
- a four year undergraduate degree in a relevant field;
- three year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma in a relevant field;
- a three year undergraduate degree with a major in a relevant field and at least two years relevant work experience, or academic qualifications deemed equivalent; or
- academic qualification deemed to be equivalent by the University's Admissions Committee.

Assumed Knowledge

Applicants should have either practical knowledge of the tourism industry having been employed at management level for five or more years or have an undergraduate award particularly but not exclusively in any of the following social science disciplines: geography, economics, history, management, marketing, anthropology, psychology, education, political science, law.

Professional Recognition

The University's Tourism Program comprising undergraduate and postgraduate courses has received accreditation under the National Tourism Accreditation Scheme in 2004, 2005 and 2006. It is also an accredited provider for the International Centre for Excellence (ICE) in Tourism and Hospitality Education. This accreditation was received in 2006.
