This course is designed for students interested in working as a teacher in primary school settings. It provides students with a sound theoretical base for teaching along with opportunities to develop a repertoire of practical skills.

The course is carefully structured with a balance between theory and practice in teaching. Students engage in a series of education and curriculum study units which are clustered with appropriate professional experiences. This practical experience spans different levels and organisational modes of the primary education setting.

Students completing this course of study will be qualified to teach children 5-12 years of age.

48 credit points required units as set out below:

(a) Required (45 credit points):
- MJ0073 Major in Key Learning Areas (EC/P GE) (Restricted) (24 credit points)
- MN0086 Minor in Professional Experience (Early Childhood/Primary GE) (Restricted) (12 credit points)

(b) Restricted choice (3 credit points) as follows:

Professional Experience units are an essential component of this course. Students who are unable to complete these units will not be able to meet the academic requirements of the Bachelor of Education award.

Course Duration

4 semesters full-time, equivalent part-time, maximum 8 semesters.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor's degree or hold qualifications deemed equivalent by the University's Admissions Committee.

Additional requirements:
All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary, Graduate Entry) degree are required to complete appropriate police checks or sign employment declaration forms prior to the commencement of their Professional Experience placement.

Additional admission requirement:
Additionally students from countries other than Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and the Republic of Ireland require an IELTS overall score of at least 7.5.

International students are advised that there are English Language requirements for employment in Australia that can be met through the completion of four full years (or part time equivalent) of tertiary study in English in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland, or through completing a proof of English language proficiency assessment with IELTS bands with no score below 7 in any of the four skills areas and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening.

Assumed Knowledge

Students who wish to teach in NSW must have the following:
- ACT: English and Mathematics (T with C pass) plus (T) level in Science when taken as a secondary teaching discipline.
- NSW: Higher School Certificate English minimum Band 4 (Standard, English as a Second Language or Advanced) and Higher School Certificate General Mathematics minimum Band 4 or completion of Mathematics or Extension Mathematics to an equivalent standard and Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4.

Professional Recognition

This course is registered by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute and recognised as a teaching qualification throughout Australia.
