This course is designed for students interested in working as a teacher in primary school settings. It provides students with a sound theoretical base for teaching along with opportunities to develop a repertoire of practical skills and explore other areas of interest.

Throughout the course students engage in a series of education and curriculum study units clustered with appropriate professional experiences. This practical experience spans different levels and organisational modes of the primary education setting, culminating in a semester long teaching internship during fourth year.

Students completing this degree will be qualified to teach children 5-12 years of age.

Course Requirements

96 credit points comprising:
(a) Required (84 credit points):
- MJ0118 Major in Teacher Education (18 credit points)
- MJ0096 Major in Professional Experience (Primary Education) (Restricted) (18 credit points)
- MJ0157 Major in Teaching Literacy and Numeracy (Restricted) (18 credit points)
- MJ0074 Major in Key Learning Areas - Primary (Restricted) (24 credit points)

Required units as follows:
7840 Learning with Technology
7152 Teaching English as a Second Language

Professional Experience units are an essential component of this course. Students who are unable to complete these units will not be able to meet the academic requirements of the Bachelor of Education award.

(b) Open electives (12 credit points):
12 credit points open electives from any part of the University, as either a minor or individual units.

Course Duration

8 semesters full-time, equivalent part-time; maximum 20 semesters.

Admission Requirements

Normal University requirements for admission to an undergraduate course.

Additional requirements:
All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree are required to complete appropriate police checks or sign employment declaration forms prior to the commencement of their Professional Experience placement.

Additional admission requirement:
Additionally students from countries other than Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and the Republic of Ireland require an IELTS overall score of at least 7.5.

International students are advised that there are English Language requirements for employment in Australia that can be met through the completion of four full years (or part time equivalent) of tertiary study in English in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland, or through completing a proof of English language proficiency assessment with IELTS bands with no score below 7 in any of the four skills areas and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening.

Assumed Knowledge

Students on entry to this course are advised to have the following:
ACT: English (T with C minimum pass *)
NSW: Higher School Certificate English minimum Band 4 *.

* 4796 Literacy for Teachers is a unit studied in 1st year that bridges this requirement.

Professional Recognition

This course is registered by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute and recognised as a teaching qualification throughout Australia.

Subsumable awards

Students who are unable to complete a four-year Bachelor of Education degree may be eligible to exit the course after three years with a Bachelor of Educational Studies. To qualify for this award, students must have completed 72 credit points or more from the academic requirements of the four-year course as set out above. The Bachelor of Educational Studies is NOT professionally accredited and does not qualify students to teach in the ACT or New South Wales.
