Introduction
At the postgraduate level, students may undertake a Master of Information Studies degree by research in one of the following areas of specialisation: knowledge management, information and records management, information retrieval, library systems and services, internet communication.
At the completion of this research degree students will be able to:
- apply knowledge and skill in research methodology and research methods in research endeavours;
- frame and conduct an in-depth investigation and analysis of a particular professional issue or set of issues;
- produce a dissertation which constitutes an original and significant contribution to the relevant literature, body of knowledge and/or to professional practice;
- conduct research with a strong awareness and practice of an ethical framework.
Course Requirements
48 credit points comprising:
(a) Required (6 credit points) as follows:
7574 Advanced Communication Theory and Research PG (6cp)
(b) Restricted choice (42 credit points) as follows:
Thesis unit, chosen from:
6865 Information Studies Thesis R FT (36cp)
6866 Information Studies Thesis R PT (36cp)
6 credit points of elective units at PG level, chosen in consultation with the course convener.
Students are also required to complete a Research Education Program that will enable them to acquire the generic skills and attributes identified as appropriate for graduates of postgraduate research programs at the University of Canberra. In addition, Canberra-based students are expected to participate fully in the postgraduate seminar program.

Course Duration
Standard four semesters full-time or equivalent.Admission Requirements
- a degree or Honours degree in a relevant area, with at least an average grade of Credit or better; and
- evidence of a capacity for conducting research at the Masters level.
The level of academic attainment required may be met by such qualifications as a graduate diploma in librarianship or a Bachelor's degree with a major in knowledge or information studies. Qualifications in knowledge management, information studies, librarianship, records management, communication, information retrieval or other related disciplines may also meet the requirements. In some cases, bridging subjects may be imposed.
Credit to a maximum of 12 credit points may be granted for 7574 Advanced Communication Theory and Research PG (6cp) and 2 coursework elective PG units.
