Introduction

The Graduate Certificate course in Information Technology is designed to meet three kinds of need:
1. Graduates of any discipline who wish to come to an understanding of the ICT field and its impacts;
2. ICT graduates who wish to examine an an immerging area of ICT knowledge in depth; and
3. ICT professionals with no tertiary qualification but extensive relevant work experience who wish to qualify for admission to further study at graduate diploma and masters level.

Credit may be given for units successfully completed in the Graduate Certificate if a student wishes to proceed to the Graduate Diploma in Business Informatics or the Master of Technology degree at the University of Canberra.

Most PG level units in this course have pre-requisites. Students will need to demonstrate equivalent knowledge from formal study or work experience to the satisfaction of the unit convener before enrolling in such units. Prospective students should contact the course convener prior to admission to the course to ensure they have the pre-requisite knowledge required for unit enrolment.

12 credit points as set out below:

Students may choose the generalist award, Graduate Certificate in Information Technology, or a specialist award. The mix of required and restricted choice units will depend on this choice as outlined below.

Graduate Certificate in Information Technology
The learning outcome of this award is a capacity for graduates to become competent in, or expand on, some area of technical information technology.

The learning outcome of this award is a capacity for graduates to analyse and design cyber security.

Graduate Certificate in Games Programming and Virtual Worlds
The learning outcome of this award is a capacity for graduates with a programming background to program active objects in the newer Second Life and OpenSim virtual worlds and their use in social and business informatics.

Typical Course Structure

Course Duration

One semester full-time or part-time equivalent. Maximum ten semesters.

Admission Requirements

A Bachelor degree from Australia or a recognised overseas institution. Contact the course convenor to design a course to meet your needs. Note that some units require ICT prerequisite knowledge. Students who do not hold a Bachelor degree may be able to gain course admission on the basis of Equivalent Graduate Status - for more information on this process contact the University's Admissions Office.

Assumed Knowledge

Fluency in the use of desktop computers (eg for everyday work) and excellent English spoken and written communication skills.

Subsumable awards

The Graduate Certificate in Information Technology is subsumable into the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology and the Master of Information Technology.
