This program is for students of high ability who aim to make careers in legal areas associated with forensic evidence. The program contains the Bachelor of Laws course as its second degree. The double degree provides the qualifications to practise as a lawyer as well equipping students with a qualification orientated to crime investigation and the preparation of evidence for justice processes. As lawyers, graduates will be able to meaningfully cross-examine expert witnesses across a range of forensic disciplines. The breadth offered by the double degree gives graduates a broader perspective, provides greater vocational flexibility, and increases the range of employment opportunities in both the private and public sectors.
Forensic Science is the application of scientific principles and various scientific disciplines to the investigation of criminal acts. The role of a forensic scientist is to present objective evidence and opinions that will assist the court with their deliberation process. The Forensic Studies component of this double degree emphasises, in particular, the laboratory-based fields of forensic biology and forensic chemistry, and cover areas such as the collection and examination of trace evidence, toxicology, specialised chemical/biological analyses, and the interpretation and reporting of analytical results.
Note: Students completing the forensic component of the double degree will qualify for a Bachelor of Forensic Studies award, not the Bachelor of Applied Science in Forensic Studies (142JA) unless additional units are completed in consultation with the Forensic Studies Course Convener.
