Honorary Degree Committee

Committee of University Council

The Honorary Degree Committee is established under clause 8(1) of the Honorary Degree Rules 2008, which replaced the Honorary Degree Rules 1992. The Rules were endorsed at Council meeting no. 115 on 7 December 2007 and are effective from 8 February 2008, the date of effect of the Honorary Degree Statute 2008.

Purpose

To recommend to Council candidates for admission to honorary degrees.

Membership

Clause 8(1) of the Honorary Degree Rules 2008 provides that the membership of the Committee consist of:

8 (1) There is to be an Honorary Degree Committee consisting of:

(a) the Chancellor or his or her nominee;
(b) the Vice-Chancellor;
(c) the Chair of Academic Board;
d) two members of Council appointed by Council who are not members of the Committee by virtue of paragraphs (a), (b) or (c).

(2) A person who is a member of the Committee because he or she holds an office of the kind referred to in paragraph 8(1)(a), (b) or (c) ceases to be a member of the Committee if that person ceases to hold that office.

(3) A person who is a member of the Committee under paragraph 8(1)(d):

(a) is to hold office for 3 years from the date of appointment and may not be reappointed; and
(b) ceases to be a member of the Committee if the person ceases to be a member of the Council.

The procedures of the Committee are detailed in the Honorary Degree Rules 2008.

Meeting Dates

This Committee only meets as required. The Committee meets jointly with the Nominations and Senior Appointments Committee.
