UC START

What is UC-Start?

UC-START has been developed by the University of Canberra College in conjunction with the University of Canberra to provide a pathway for Australian students (or those with permanent residence status) who wish to start an undergraduate degree at the University of Canberra but whose present academic background and qualifications do not allow them direct entry. Students can make a start towards an undergraduate degree by attempting two units (subjects), thus making their introduction to university study easier than usual.

What are the details of the UC-Start program?

How will my program be organised?

On the application form you are asked to nominate up to three degrees which (in order of priority) you would consider studying at the University of Canberra. If you miss out on being accepted into your first choice you will be considered for those degrees lower down your priority list. As part of the application process students will be provided with two units which will allow them to gain academic credit toward their chosen degree course.

What is the time commitment for each unit?

Each unit will require between 4 to 6 hours, but mostly 5 hours of lectures and/or tutorials a week. In addition you will be expected to follow-up at home with private study.

How are classes organised?

Most classes will be in the university format of lectures, supported by small group tutorials or workshops. Consultations with academic staff can also be arranged to provide students with the opportunity to receive assistance on an individual basis.

Is other assistance available?

An academic assistance program is made available during orientation and the first few weeks of semester. Ongoing academic assistance is also available.

What are the assessment methods?

During each term you will be required to complete a number of tasks for each of your units. Possible tasks may include essays, oral presentations, research reports, in-class tests and group assignments. At the end of your course you will sit for an examination in most of your units. Your eligibility to enter UC will be based solely on your UC-START results. As a minimum, students must gain at least two pass grades. Two pass grades is equivalent to a UAI of 77. If you wish to enter a degree with a UAI entry score greater than 77 then higher grades will be required.

Are all degrees at the University of Canberra available?

Most degrees at the University of Canberra are available to successful UC-START students.

Please note that the following degrees are NOT available through the UC-START program:

This information is current as at July 2007

  • Bachelor of Education in Secondary Teaching (Music)
  • Bachelor of Interior Design *

* A link to this degree is available through CIT

Please look at our Timetable to find out about our next intake dates.

What do I have to do to proceed to the University of Canberra?

Provided both selected units are successfully passed in the same semester students can then apply to the University of Canberra for admission to an undergraduate degree.

Some degrees are only available to UC-START students who enter the University mid year (July) on a part time basis.
