BiographyJohn Gross received his New Zealand Teachers College Diploma, from the Auckland Teachers College in 1970, and his New Zealand Trained Teachers Certificate in 1972. He then went on to complete a Diploma in Physical Education, from the University of Otago in 1976. Graduate studies included a Master of Science, from the University of Waterloo, Canada in 1979, and a Doctor of Philosophy, specialising in sport psychology from the University of Iowa, in 1982. His specialist research interests in science are motivational aspects of sports performance and coaching behaviour effectiveness, and he has published a number of research papers in this area. He has held research and teaching positions at the Canberra College of Advanced Education, the University of Wollongong, the Auckland College of Education, and in 1989 took up a position at UC where he was responsible for teaching subjects across all three years of the Sports Studies undergraduate program. At various times he also served as Course Convenor for Sports Coaching and Sports Media. John designed post graduate programs of study in sport psychology for Wollongong University, and UC. He also wrote the first distance education course in sport psychology which was delivered by Central Queensland University. He also collaborated with the Australian Institute of Sport to run the first ever Australian conference in sport psychology, and co-edited the proceedings. John was formerly the Head of Primary School Physical Education (1988) at the Auckland College of Education, the Director of Sports Studies (1991-1995), and Head of the School of Human and Biomedical Sciences (1998-2002) at UC. He also served as one of the elected staff representatives on the University’s Promotions Committee.
