HouseMod is NATSEM’s regional microsimulation model of housing in Australia. The model provides the user with the ability to create small area estimates of housing and housing related variables such as housing stress, Rent Assistance, and poverty and to simulate the impacts of different policy options at the small area level. The model’s base year is 2007 but is capable of projecting results out to 2017. The model can also be customised to project further into the future.
The model is based on the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Survey of Income and Housing (2003/04) and uses detailed regional census data to provide the user with an extremely detailed regional data set that enables complex policy options to be simulated for 1350 regions (Statistical Local Areas) in Australia. Policy simulations have been incorporated into the model with the inclusion of NATSEM’s model of Australia’s tax and social security system – STINMOD. The model projects small area data into the future using the ABS’ small area population projections and other ABS projections for household type and labour force.
HouseMod has been used jointly with the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) in the past to develop small area estimates of Poverty and housing stress and to simulate the effects of alternative Commonwealth Rent Assistance policies on the regions of Australia.
