Thinkers in Residence

Professor Jenny Graves Professor Jenny Graves  BSc Hons (1st class), MSc Genetics, PhD Molecular Biology

Professor Graves was for 30 years an academic at La Trobe University before leading the Comparative Genomics Research Group at the Australian National University. She has made seminal contributions to mammal genetics particularly through her studies of the organisation, function and evolution of genes in Australia's mammals and is internationally recognised for her work on the origin and evolution of vertebrate sex chromosomes, the inactivation of X chromosomes, the control of DNA synthesis in mammal cells, and sex determination in birds and reptiles. Professor Graves is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (FAA) and became Thinker in Residence at the Institute for Applied Ecology in 2011.

Research / Professional interests:   A focus on the understanding of mammalian genome organization and evolution, exploiting the genetic diversity of Australia's unique mammals as a source of genetic variation to study highly conserved genetic structures and processes.

Professor Charles Krebs Professor Charles Krebs  BSc Wildlife Management, MA Zoology, PhD Zoology (University of British Columbia)
Adjunct Professor in Ecology

Professor Krebs has had a stellar career as an ecologist in USA, Canada and Australia and is internationally renowned for his text, Ecology: The Experimental Analysis of Distribution and Abundance, a textbook used worldwide to teach ecology, and for his pioneering experimental approach to ecology including fundamental work on predator prey interactions and the Fence Effect (also known as the Krebs Effect). Professor Krebs has been a Thinker in Residence at the Institute for Applied Ecology since 2006, spending the Australian summer in Canberra and the northern summer at the University of British Columbia.

Research / Professional interests:   Population dynamics, community ecology, ecological methods.
