Postdoctoral Fellow positions available at IAE
The University of Canberra has set an ambitious research agenda and as part of this program we are appointing up to five Postdoctoral Fellows/Researchers each year between, 2011 – 2013. The areas of research focus for these appointments are: Biomedical Science; Environmental Science (2 positions); Governance; and Sports Science. The Postdoctoral Fellow positions at IAE are in Epigenetics and Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology.

Fully funded PhD opportunity with the Freshwater Ecology Laboratory
The Freshwater Ecology Laboratory is seeking a MSc or PhD student with interests in the recruitment ecology of Australian native fish. The prospective candidate should have experience in quatic ecology, with experience in larval sampling, fish ageing, habitat characterisation or radiotelemetry an advantage. An Industry-funded scholarship of 22-30K pa for 2-3 years depending on postgraduate degree enrolled in, and existing qualifications.

Professor Scott Edwards

Molecular Ecology in the 21st century - Professor Scott Edwards
As part of the 2012 IAE Seminar Series a public lecture 'Molecular Ecology in the 21st century: Genomic foundations of an integrative science' will be presented by Professor Scott Edwards from Harvard University. Professor Edwards' research focuses on many aspects of vertebrate molecular evolution and population genetics, with an emphasis on birds, including evolutionary history and phylogeography, comparative genomics, disease ecology and population genetics.

Professor David Choquenot

Professor David Choquenot - IAE's new Director
The IAE welcomes its new Director, Professor David Choquenot, who commenced on 10 April. David comes to the IAE from New Zealand where he was General Manager, Biological Systems at Landcare and held an appointment as Professor of Ecology at the University of Auckland. His research interests focus on vertebrates, particularly how trophic interactions between vertebrates and what they eat drives population dynamics and community structure.

Research to boost the pig-nosed turtle's chance of survival
The University of Canberra and the Papua New Guinea Institute of Biological Research are working on a project aimed at the conservation of the unique habitat of the pig-nosed turtle. The meat and eggs of the turtle are an important source of food for the local people of the Kikori delta. Dr Carla Eisemberg from IAE and her team are working with the local community to address the issue of sustainable harvest and are working with landowners to establish protected beaches to help boost turtle numbers.

Invasive Animals CRC

Invasive Animals CRC funded - IAE research projects
The Invasive Animals CRC, based at the University of Canberra has been funded in the new round of CRCs. $20 m will be allocated and several IAE research projects will be conducted. New work will include Professors Georges and Sarre working with Dr Ezaz and Principal Research Fellow Mark Lintermans on invasive fish. These are a major threat to native species and ecological communities and early detection of such fish while they are still rare is the key to preventing their establishment.
