Would you like to work as a UC Student Aspirations Agent?

The University of Canberra’s Student Equity and Access Office is seeking to employ enthusiastic students for paid work as Student Aspirations Agents.

The Student Equity and Access Office provides a range of programs and services to support current and future students. These programs include the Rural Student Support Program, Refugee Student Support Program, Faceback Program, Elite Athlete Program, Outstanding Scholars Program, Aspire UC and UC 4 Yourself Campus Visits and Programs.

As an Aspirations Agent, your role will include working on our Outreach Programs to inspire high school students in years 7 through 10 from disadvantaged backgrounds to aspire to higher education; however, you may also be invited to assist with a range of our programs throughout the year.

Duties and responsibilities of a UC Aspirations Agent may include:

  • assisting with our campus-based UC student equity and support programs,
  • facilitating student-to-student sessions and discussion forums at a number of our target high schools,
  • participating in panel discussions answering a variety of student generated questions about university life, study skills, courses and career pathways from your own experience,
  • assisting with on-campus “Student for-a-day” programs which may involve: leading campus tours, working with groups of students, ensuring students are supported during their visit and performing other program-related tasks as required, and
  • being a positive role model and a proud ambassador of the University of Canberra.

By working with a number of enthusiastic student Aspirations Agents, drawn from a variety of disciplines and a range of hometowns, our aim is to build networks and relationships with high school students in Canberra and the outlying region.

Ideally, a student Aspirations Agent would be able to easily identify with our target high school students, many of whom will be from rural areas or first-in-family to pursue tertiary studies.  Aspirations Agents must have excellent communication skills, a positive attitude and be confident in sharing their university experiences with others. Applicants should be reliable, proactive and outgoing.

Dear students

We are implementing improvements to security on campus. As of Monday 20 June, all buildings across campus will close at 6:30pm. Access to buildings between 6:30pm to 10pm will be by swipe card only and all staff and students will have access to all external doors across the campus.

Students will need to have a valid ID card as this will now be required for swipe entry. If you do not have a valid card the student centre in Building 1 will be able to provide one to you.

Security officers will be on hand to assist staff and students if they are having trouble entering the buildings, security may be contacted on 6201 2222 (24 hrs/day).

The computer labs in Building 7 and 11 will continue to have 24-hour access for staff and students and the library commons will remain open until 2am, both with swipe card access after hours.

At night, Security officers are available to escort students to car parks and residences. This service is available by phoning 6201 2222.

Students are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, thefts or forced entry to Security, which are located in Building 1 on the Concourse opposite the Library.

Thank you for your efforts to keep our campus secure.

This Thursday, 14th April, there will be a number of exciting activities to raise funds for those affected by the Earthquake in Japan. All profits will go to Red Cross Australia for the Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal 2011. The program is as follows:

  1. Faceback will be on from 16:30-17:30 in the Refectory (changed from Wed)
  2. Following Faceback there will be a Japanese cult movie shown - gold coin donation
  3. Food markets from 19:00-21:00

16:30-17:30: Special Edition of Faceback

Pre-Event Drinks and Snacks (Provided by the Student Equity and Support Unit)

Location: lounge area of Melt Deli (refectory)

This will provide students and staff with a chance to mingle, chat and discuss the recent events in Japan. We'd love to see any of our international students, in particular those who have personally been affected in some way by similar natural disasters (such as last year's floods in Pakistan or the 2006 Indian Ocean Tsunami). We'd appreciate hearing your individual thoughts and experiences.

17:30-19:30: Haiku Poetry Reading and Tampopo Movie

Location: UCU theatrette

Gold coin donation - or as much as you can give.

  • Haiku reading by Dr Paul Magee
  • Movie Tampopo (1985) Japanese cult classic! "... utterly original, utterly unforgettable collision of yakuza film, Western and slapstick comedy"; "a classic of cinematic gastronomic eroticism" (not so suitable for kids).

19:00-21:00: Food night market

Location: UCU refectory

We all enjoy food. Sharing food with friends and family is one of the great joys of life. So here's an invitation to get together and share food, to stop and think how good it is to be able to sit around and enjoy the food together, and then, extend our sympathy to the people who were so suddenly robbed of this joy. Volunteers (students and staff) are making and selling their famous dishes, and donating the profits. We have popular Japanese dishes like sushi, miso soup, okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) and Japanese curry; plus delicacies from round the world, such as Argentine empanadas and Sudanese sweets.

Please show your support for this event by coming along, meeting new people and eating some amazing food.

Questions regarding the event can be forwarded to Yuko Kinoshita (the organizer) at Yuko.Kinoshita@canberra.edu.au.

This event is supported by the Faculty of Arts and Design. The UCU theatrette and refectory have been made available through generous support from UCU.

A new car park has been constructed next to Building 13A and behind Building 24, adjacent to College Street, and is now open.

This reflects increases in activity in that area, with the opening of building 24 and UC College operations on the southern side of the campus.

There are 78 car spaces, including one for people with disabilities, and four motorcycle spaces. There is full lighting for night access and there are no time restrictions. Access to the car park is on Pinnaroo Street which runs off Kirinari Street (see Campus Map).
