UC joins in Prime Minister's apology

The Council and staff of the University of Canberra join in the apology made by the Prime Minister on 13 February in saying 'sorry' for past injustices, and particularly for the forced removal of Indigenous children from their families. In our 40th year as a higher education institution we explicitly acknowledge that the University is built on land for which the Ngunnawal People have custodial responsibility. The first commitment in our current Strategic Plan is to ensure that respect for Australia's traditional owners and concern for their current circumstances influences our plans and actions.

This statement was drafted by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor and has been endorsed by the University of Council

Make the world your classroom! Study abroad in 2008

At UC we challenge you to see the world, experience a new culture, make new friends and truly become a global citizen - all while still completing your UC degree.

Through the UC Student Exchange program, you can spend one or two semesters overseas at one of our partner institutions and learn about another culture while you're working towards your degree.

You’ll study subjects relevant to your course, and receive full credit towards your UC degree when you come home.

Apply now to give your degree an international edge. Places are still available for Semester 2, 2008.

For more information, visit International exchange for UC students.

UC academics awarded grant for science education project

UCstaff members Dr Brett Lidbury and Dr Felicia Zhang have been awarded a Carrick Institute grant of $121,992.00 over two years for their project, A Cross-Disciplinary Approach to Language Support for First Year Students in the Science Disciplines.

Learning the language of the sciences can be a real barrier for beginning students. Some previous studies have suggested that first year biology students learn more new words in their first year than students studying foreign languages.

The project brings together academic staff from:

  • the University of Canberra
  • the University of Technology Sydney
  • the University of Sydney
  • the University of Newcastle
  • the University of Tasmania.

The project will study scientific language comprehension in first year biology, chemistry and physics programs. On-line tools and face-to-face strategies will be developed to help overcome the obstacle of science’s "foreign" languages.

This study will benefit from the findings of a previous University of Canberra-funded pilot study where foreign language pedagogy was used in the University of Canberra second year Genetics unit.

The Carrick Institute recently honoured five other UC academics when Margi Böhm, Amanda Burrell, Patricia Easteal, Anita Mak and Julie Posetti received Carrick citations for outstanding contributions to student learning.

Apply now - 2008 applications are now open!
