Graduate profile:
Bronwyn Magdulski
Corporate Lawyer, Country Energy, athlete and co-host of ABC radio sports program Grandstand, Canberra
1997 - graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies and went on to finish a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canberra.
“A law degree is such a versatile qualification to have. I’ve always been interested in the law, but I was also attracted by the degree’s ability to apply to other fields. We had great opportunities and facilities at UC, including a beautiful new Moot Court, and the School had an attitude that encouraged everyone to have a go – regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or background. Taking this attitude on board, I’ve never felt constrained to fit within a stereotype.”
I always wanted to be doing something where I felt like I was making a difference.
My best memories of UC are the ALSA Conferences and fettuccine carbonara at the café.
My first job out of uni was as a medical negligence plaintiff lawyer in Sydney.
My career highlight was working with Dr Gavan Griffith QC, Solicitor-General for the Commonwealth of Australia, on the 1998 High Court case of Kartinyeri versus The Commonwealth (Hindmarsh Island Bridge Case).
After this, winning the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association In-House Lawyer Young Achiever of the Year (2006).
Today I am head of the Legal Services and Corporate Records department at Country Energy, Tim Gavel’s co-host on Local ABC Radio’s Grandstand and a member of the Australian Bobsleigh Team.
In the future I want to be still enjoying going to work as much as I do now – and still combining sport, media and the law.
AND JUST FOR FUN...
My hero is my brother Simon. He always has something profoundly encouraging, logical and supportive to say.
My favourite food is Japanese mungbean noodles and soy lattés!
My favourite band is Snow Patrol.
The book I’m reading at the moment is Portrait of a Killer (Jack the Ripper) by Patricia Cornwell.
If I ruled the world I would make Babel Fish available to everyone – promote a bit of cultural empathy.
